Where are you from Clay, and what did you do for a living before you came to Costa Rica?
I was born and raised in Long Beach, California. I worked in the surf industry with Robert August Surf Co and I taught golf for ten years in Los Angeles.
Tell us about how Costa Rica first came on your radar? When was your first visit and what were your first impressions of the country?
I first learned about Costa Rica when I was nine years old from the Bruce Brown surf film The Endless Summer II. My first trip to CR was in 2003 and I instantly fell in love with the country, its people and waves.
When did you start your current business? And why this type of business?
I started Walk On Water Adventures & Media in 2018. We are a professional surf/adventure guiding service and media company, based in the Playa Tamarindo and Avellanas area. We offer a customizable itinerary that is focused on providing the client with the highest quality service available. The main goal of the company is to share our passion, love and respect for Costa Rica and its people, culture, and ecology.
What were the most challenging things about opening the business? And what are the most challenging things about running it?
The most challenging part of opening a business in Costa Rica is the paperwork and initial setup of everything from the bank accounts to the website but in actuality, it’s really not that hard to set up when you have great people around you to help guide you.
The most challenging part of running the business is doing everything yourself and then trying to make your first expansion and giving up control in specific areas.
In your opinion, why is the business successful?
I think our success is based on a number of aspects: we offer a service that no other companies provide, we have a very deep connection with our vendors and their employees and we are truly a professional surf guiding and media company.
Please tell us about any future plans or new additions for the business.
I’m really excited about my partnership with Christie’s real estate in Tamarindo and Tamarindo Luxury Villas. We’re developing a robust media division which will be launching November 2024 and this partnership gives our clients, friends and family exclusive access to the best real estate and property management company in the country.
